Whoever we are supporting for president this year, we can all agree on one thing: our broken political system works just fine for wealthy special interests, but not for the rest of us.
We all know it’s true, but we often times we feel like there’s nothing we can do about it. But if we stand together, we can build a democracy that is truly of, by, and for the people.
That’s why this April, AU students will join thousands of others from across the country for Democracy Spring and Democracy Awakening, a powerful, peaceful, and massive sit-in on April 15 at our nation’s Capitol. In what will be one of the largest civil disobedience actions in a generation, we will demand a Congress that will take immediate action to end the corruption of big money in our politics and ensure free and fair elections in which every American has an equal voice.
There are real solutions to rebalance the system – supported by Democrats and Republicans alike – already on the table in both the Senate and House right now. Yet Congress refuses to act. Democracy Spring and Democracy Awakening is the bold intervention we need to demand a government that works for us, not against us.
AU students could probably think of plenty excuses not to join the thousands of Americans putting their bodies on the line to get big money out of politics. But now is the time to take action.
Now is the time to stand up, by sitting in.
So many of us came to AU to be a part of the most politically active school in the country. Now is our chance to show the world what we’re made of. Join us. Spring is coming.
